How should I act when texting someone...?

How should I act when texting someone who lives in a different state that I don't know? I got her # last night and I decided to text her this morning, I don't know her at all but she gave me her # and in all honesty I don't really know how to get to know her... I'm using my ipod so my real # doesn't have to be used btw, so no safety concerns. Don't tell me I shouldn't be, but I'm adventurous and wanna get to know new people... So yeah. Thanks! :)
