Should I stay in Sherman Oaks or Hermosa Beach?

I'm going to Los Angeles in Sept and I am trying to decide on 2 hotels to stay at: 1 is in Hermosa Beach and 1 is in Sherman Oaks. I wanted to be close to the airport, hence the hermosa beach option) since i'm only going for about 4 days or so but it seems far away from everywhere I want to visit. I'd like to spend time at Hollywood and Highland area and spent time in Santa Monica at the beach. Which area would be better for me between the 2? Don't suggest staying in Santa Monica or Hollywood cuz the 2 above are my only options. I will be going alone so safety is a concern. Thanks.
